چکیده

This paper presents results of a research aiming at modeling the evolution of road surface skid resistance using statistical and phenomenological approaches. Data are provided by a database composed of measurements collected on French roads during ten years: skid resistance values (Sideway Force Coefficient measured by SCRIM machine), macrotexture values (Mean Profile Depth), road geometry, traffic and age. Principal component analyses determine the connection between relevant factors. Analyses of variance enable the selection of independent variables used in the evolution laws. Various types of evolution laws are explored: linear regressions with one to four parameters, non-linear regressions and logarithmic functions. In parallel, model based on the combination of the main factors that can explain the skid resistance evolution is developed. This model takes into account both mechanical effect like polishing under traffic and ageing effect (changes in asphalt mix properties due to the weather effect). In a last part of the study, results obtained with the two approaches on a specific database are compared. ha l-0 08 51 12 7, v er si on 1 12 A ug 2 01 3 Manuscrit auteur, publié dans "MAIREPAV7 (7th International Conference on Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Pavements and Technological Control), France (2012)"

Pavement Prediction Performance Models and Relation with Traffic Fatalities and Injuries

This paper presents some results of a study, which aimed at modelling pavement evolution by different methods. In a first part, a database was constituted with data collected on French roads in the last decades. The database contains skid resistance values (Sideway Force Coefficient measured by SCRIM/Sideway force Coefficient Routine Investigation Machine), macrotexture values (Mean Profile Dep...

Enhancing Skid Resistance of Two-Component Road Marking Paint using Mineral and Recycled Materials

Low skid resistance of road marking paint is one of the major issues in the safety of vehicle drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians when traveling on the city streets. Among the variety of marking paint, two-component paint is widely used at intersections and roundabouts. Therefore, the paint used should have adequate skid resistance. The object of this study was to evaluat...

Towards real-time skid resistance forecast

For any given road layout or curvature skid resistance as property of pavement surface and tyre is a decisive factor limiting the speed threshold for safe driving. Skid resistance is no fixed value and is significantly lowered in case of precipitation depending on form and rate. A further influence factor in such cases is the macro texture of pavements due to their capacity to hold precipitatio...

The Effect of Asphalt Concrete Micro & Macro Texture on Skid Resistance

Skid resistance and road condition are common indices of road safety; therefore providing adequate skidding resistance will reduce the incidence of road accidents. The surface macrotexture has a large effect on the characteristics of road surface skidding, which is the focus of this research. During the study, the mean texture depth of the road surface was measured, in order to determine the co...

Impact of Volcanic Ash on Road and Airfield Surface Skid Resistance

Volcanic ash deposited on paved surfaces during volcanic eruptions often compromises skid resistance, which is a major component of safety. We adopt the British pendulum test method in laboratory conditions to investigate the skid resistance of road asphalt and airfield concrete surfaces covered by volcanic ash sourced from various locations in New Zealand. Controlled variations in ash characte...
